Each house team submitted their Term 3 glider projects and they competed to see which traveled the furthest. One glider stood out, created by Matthew, which he created using a 3D printer. Learn more about Matthew's design process by following the link below.
For Term 4, there will be 2 STEAM projects to be completed. The first project will be a catapult project, where teams will compete to see which catapult will launch a ball the furthest. For the second project, each team will grow a sunflower to see which team can nurture their flower to grow the tallest.
Students researched and did presentations about careers in chemistry. We also discussed the atomic theory and history of the discovery of the atom. We did a cahoots activity about pure substances (elements and compounds) and mixtures (homogeneous and heterogenous).
We began working on the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley alongside the grade 12 English class. We worked on some of the same areas: background of the author and its relationship to both romanticism and gothic literature. Our focus in grade 10 English will more on comprehension of plot and its use of literary elements, whereas grade 12 students will be analyzing the text more in relation to in-depth themes and argumentative lenses.
Students did a periodic table scavenger hunt and labeling activity. They are now working as a team to make a matching card game of the first 20 elements (including Bohr Rutherford diagrams, ion diagrams, and physical/chemical properties).
We covered general information relating to the nature and scope of accounting, what it involves, and its relationship to different sectors and industries. We also worked on foundational key terms associated with the accounting field. The class is currently completing a project that involves creating a fictional, but realistic business, a general vision of product(s) and/or service(s), a logo, and a poster.
We focused on the nature of business, as well as its different types, expressions and associated operations. We also looked at businesses on an international level. The class is currently working on 3-part primary project on oil pipelines in Canada.
Students were introduced to contour line drawings of objects/portraits to improve observation skills, fine motor control, and expressive lines through a series of drawings.
Focused on the fundamentals of design, colour theory, typography, and the design process. One of the exercises asked the students to find photos of objects, clip them and arrange them into a colour wheel. It yielded some fun results!
We have been learning about the computing environment and systems with a focus on hardware and software. We dismantled two computer monitors and a tower to investigate the hardware and identify the different aspects required to make a computer work.
Students went through the measurement review and have completed the unit on waves. The waves unit had two labs to complete that students worked in class on. They will have their waves test on Monday of next week.
We have been reviewing programming concepts and skills, including a review of basic Python coding. This student also participated in our computer activity.
We began working on the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. We reviewed past book covers over the last century, read about the background of the author, and discussed elements of romanticism and gothic literature evident in the text.
Moving forward, parents are asked to report any absences or late arrivals to attendance@laureatecollege.ca or call the school and leave a message.
Lost and Found
All lost items should please be returned to the front desk in the lobby. If you are missing any belongings please speak to Kathryn at the front desk to see if they have been returned.
Snow Day Procedures
For any snow days or school closures, the school principal will inform staff and faculty members at 6:45 am. The house advisors will then inform their students accordingly.
Cell Phone Policy
As of September 2024, the Ontario Ministry of Education introduced the No Cell Phone Policy during school hours. There was discretion at the secondary level to use cell phones as a learning tool under the direction of the teachers that we followed in term 1 and 2. However, the observations from staff is that cell phones are being used for personal reasons.
Therefore, starting term 3 (Wednesday January 29, 2025), no cell phone is permitted from 8:30 am to 3:15 pm. If students are involved in an after-school club, no cell phones are permitted from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. For boarding students, cell phones are permitted after 4:30 pm and during study hall.
If the new policy is not adhered to, the students will be reported to the office and required to leave their cell phone in the main office until the end of the school day. Repeated violation of no cell phone will lead to further consequences. If there is an emergency where you must contact your child, please call the main office at 416-800-8434 where arrangements will be made to connect you with your child.
