We are working alongside the Burlington Chamber of Commerce, Flamborough Chamber of Commerce, and the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce to host the Joint Business After 5 event on our campus! This will be an opportunity for chamber members to network, as well as an opportunity for us to showcase our campus. We hope that members of our community will support us by attending the event!
Waterdown Farmer's Market
Laureate College is this year’s sponsor for the Waterdown Farmer’s Market!
On May 24, 2025, we will be at the Opening Day, featuring a speech by our Junior School Principal, Mr. Hamilton, a sponsor table, the kid’s corner, and live musical performances. We would greatly appreciate support from our school community, so please join us!

Each house team submitted their Term 3 glider projects and they competed to see which traveled the furthest. One glider stood out, created by Matthew, which he created using a 3D printer. Learn more about Matthew's design process by following the link below.
For Term 4, there will be 2 STEAM projects to be completed. The first project will be a catapult project, where teams will compete to see which catapult will launch a ball the furthest. For the second project, each team will grow a sunflower to see which team can nurture their flower to grow the tallest.
We did two labs this week: Solubility Lab - students explored what solvents and solutes work together Reactions Lab - students combined active dry yeast and hydrogen peroxide and tracked the temperature changes over time
Students are currently focusing on speaking tasks through structured discussions. These include literary analysis of the independent novel A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby, as well as thematic conversations about the importance of Mother's Day. Both topics encourage students to express personal opinions, make cultural comparisons, and apply vocabulary and grammar in meaningful contexts.
We worked on our three-part Frankenstein Final Project: the passage analysis in-class assignment, the outline for a journal entry (in the person of the creature), and the actual in-class journal entry based on the outline. Our focus for these projects is more customized to the overall curriculum expectations for grade 10 English, which influences assignment content, targeted skills, requirements, and standards.
We did a class bingo game with the formulas and names of molecules. They also explored some human activities, the reactions they result in, and the environmental/social/economic impacts. Next, they will plant beans for an experiment they designed exploring the effects of light levels on plant growth.
We finished our unit on accounting and accounting activities. We then covered a unit on balance sheets, which involved completing a secondary assignment related to creating a balance sheet for two companies. We are currently working on a primary project which entails creating a balance sheet for a fictional business created in unit 1.
Visual Arts students are currently completing their Unit 1 assignments, which focus on the use of color, line, and the elements of art. Their work includes visual examples from well-known artworks and written analysis that demonstrates their understanding of how these elements contribute to meaning and composition.
Students recently presented movie posters they created using the principles and processes of design we learned in Unit 1. They have also been learning an open source, vector-based design program called Inkscape. It is a technically challenging program but the students have produced some wonderful results!
We completed the unit on quadratic functions. Students did a marble slide challenge on Desmos where they had to transform different parent functions to make the marble pass all the starts.
We have been working on Computer Codes and Number systems, including binary, decimal and hexadecimal numbers using arithmetic. We have also been studying Cyber Security: what it is and how to use it to our advantage to keep ourselves safe on the internet.
Students have been diligently working on crafting and giving presentations on various subjects. They also learned about using simplicity and the five step process to presentation creation to help them craft presentations of their own. Students are reminded to not read from their slides, use a strong voice, and present to their audience when giving presentations.
Students went through the measurement review and have completed the unit on waves. The waves unit had two labs to complete that students worked in class on. They will have their waves test on Monday of next week.
During the first week, we covered content related to key sectors and industries in Canada. During the second week, we worked on the three types of business ownership, the relationship between business and accounting, and the accounting cycle. Our class will be moving onto a primary mid-term project about Canada's trade practices (domestic and international).
Students worked on the Kinematics unit which is Unit 2 of the course. The learned about scalars and vectors, distance and displacement, speed and velocity, acceleration, gravity, and projectiles. Students had quizzes on adding vectors and using acceleration equations. They also performed a lab using acceleration equations allowing them to collect the heights of objects without measuring them. They have their Kinematics test to start the week and then will be learning how to graph Kinematics.
We began working on our Frankenstein novel Final Project (3 parts). We completed the passage analysis in-class assignment last week, and this week we are working towards completing parts 2 & 3, which include an outline for a journal entry in the person of the creature and an actual in-class journal entry based on the outline.
We will be hosting a parents appreciation night on May 21 from 5-7pm! If you are interested in attending, please email admissions@laureatecollege.ca to RSVP. We hope to see you there!

Snow Day Procedures

Cell Phone Policy
As of September 2024, the Ontario Ministry of Education introduced the No Cell Phone Policy during school hours. There was discretion at the secondary level to use cell phones as a learning tool under the direction of the teachers that we followed in term 1 and 2. However, the observations from staff is that cell phones are being used for personal reasons.
Therefore, starting term 3 (Wednesday January 29, 2025), no cell phone is permitted from 8:30 am to 3:15 pm. If students are involved in an after-school club, no cell phones are permitted from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. For boarding students, cell phones are permitted after 4:30 pm and during study hall.
If the new policy is not adhered to, the students will be reported to the office and required to leave their cell phone in the main office until the end of the school day. Repeated violation of no cell phone will lead to further consequences. If there is an emergency where you must contact your child, please call the main office at 416-800-8434 where arrangements will be made to connect you with your child.
